Luma Tutor is a reading and math app for one child at a time, with a parent in control. This page explains what the app does and does not do with information. It is written to meet COPPA expectations for a product used by children under 13.

Lessons and progress can live on the device. A parent may type an optional first name for the child. That name stays on the device. Do not enter a last name, school name, address, or other identifying details.
A parent PIN protects settings. The PIN stays on the device.
When a child taps Read out loud, Luma may use the microphone so the child can read a passage aloud. Speech is turned into words on this device with Apple on-device speech recognition. The audio is not sent to Jaceal, to a home tutor, or to xAI. Luma compares the on-device transcript to the passage so Maya can coach missed words.
Voice never leaves the device for this feature. Luma does not ask a child to send a recording anywhere.
Grade sessions are the teacher. They work with no network, no API key, and no local model. Maya still speaks the scripted lesson lines.
Home tutor is optional. If a parent turns it on and names a computer on the home network (for example a Mac running Ollama), Maya chat text (not the child’s voice) may go to that computer so Maya can reply with extra help. That text is not sent to Jaceal. Voice for Read out loud stays on the iPhone. Lessons still work if Home tutor is off, the Mac is asleep, or the phone cannot reach that computer.
Luma does not send microphone audio to a home model. The parent chooses a home-network address only. Public internet hosts are not allowed.
Maya talks to xAI Grok only if Home tutor is off and a parent stores an xAI API key in the device Keychain. The key is not sent to Jaceal and is not shown to the child. If no key is saved, year sessions still work on the device.
Only if a parent saved an xAI key and Home tutor is off, Maya chat text (not voice, not audio) may go to xAI so Maya can reply. The app may send the Maya system prompt, the current session, and the child’s typed turn. Do not put private details (full name, address, school, phone, email) into that chat. Jaceal does not operate that model or keep those messages on our servers.
Luma is meant to be set up by a parent or guardian. The parent gate keeps kids out of settings. We do not require a child to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child beyond what a parent optionally stores on the device.
A parent can turn off Home tutor, remove the optional first name and the API key in settings, and can delete the app to remove on-device data.
